When getting your business started, understand that you have a long, hard road in front of you. Prepare for the long haul and think through how you will get the word out about your business. I had a business about 25 years ago in Fl.

It was making fruit baskets for florist and others.

My friend and I did this for about 2 years.

It was ok put a little money in my pocket.

However, business came to a standstill when a couple of the local florists ordered a basket, took it apart, and started doing their own.

So lesson number one: understand that competition can move in on your territory...and totally squash your business.

So be prepared by knowing exactly what you will do to protect your business from being taken over by the compeition.

So, twenty-five years later, I'm back at the entrepreneurial game again.

This time, I am partnering with my husband.

This past fall, my husband and I start a seasonal decorating business.

The toughest part thus far is getting the word out what we do.

It takes so much money to market, because it is a new type of business people are not sure what we do.

We have put an ad in the yellow pages at 60 dollars a month hoping it will bring some $$ this coming Christmas.

We have gone to the Atlanta market and taken some of their university classes which were interesting.

I am just hoping we make it.

I think it will take several years to get this going, so we are not quitting are days jobs.

The bottom-line.

It helps to understand what it will REALLY take to make your business a success.

If you are determined to see it succeed, I recommend that you dig in for the long haul, find ways to get the word out, and look for ways keep moving your business forward.

Also, always be on the hunt for marketing ideas for your small business that will make an impact.
